Our parents: Ron and Lily Matthews

Ron and Lily met in London during the war. Both were interested in ballroom dancing at that time.
Still during the war Lily moved to Clevedon, along with her mother and father. They came to live in Victoria House, on the sea front. This was run as a boarding house at the time. Her grandparents were already resident nearby, in the house that is now known as the Heritage Centre on the sea front.

After the war Ron (he had been in the Army) was transferred to Bristol by a plastering firm, ACV Telling, to start up a new branch. After their marriage Ron and Lily moved into a couple of rooms within Lily's grandparents house, where Christine was born. Later they moved to a ground floor flat in 'Holmesdale', a house at the top of Chapel Hill in Clevedon. Shirley was born whilst the family lived there.

The next move was to 6 Teignmouth Road. Clevedon. From there, several years later they moved to buy a house 'Villa Rosa' 21 Coleridge Vale Road South. This is where the family remained until Ron's death, when Lily moved to a sheltered flat near the town centre.

Ron's interests were mainly centred around cricket and football. He was captain of Clevedon Cricket Club for many years and was an ardent Bristol Rovers supporter.

When her daughters were young, Lily worked part time as a waitress in a restaurant above the Curzon Cinema. She later worked in a play group at Sunhill Community Centre. Her interests included the Girl Guide movement and she became a District Commissioner. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing, which she continued to enjoy until a few months prior to her passing.
